Sounds like the capacitor is getting too much current. Trace the wiring back from it and check it for a break or a short out against the frame.

I think the following applies to your unit.

I would also check the centrifugal switches and the motor windings, see page 32.

Also check that none of the windings have shorted to ground (the case) or to each other.

Capacitors can draw all kinds of high current and still be ok. Only a capacitor with an internal short will smoke.
This shorted capacitor may have damaged the timer, or the motor start winding has shorted.
If the motor hums when turned on, but fails to start, this confirms a failed start circuit, either a bad timer and or, motor.
Unfortunately, you have a Kingston type timer that cannot be checked for burnt contacts.
I would call for service on this item. A service person would have a known, good used motor to isolate the problem. The other solution would be to purchase a new timer and motor.
Either that, or order a new motor and hope that fixes it. Putting in only a new timer may result in it's failure if the motor is shorted!

If it jammed while turning the coupler clockwise, you either have jammed brake shoes, or something stuck in the tub. You can shine a light in the tub to check for items.

Hello,

I have the same problem with hayward pool pump. Put new capasitor, but it smokes. How can I repair it.
