The door being ajar can cause problems but it will not cause the compressor not to run.

The condenser is a no-clean condenser. Meaning that the condenser will get dirty but it will not affect the workings of the refrigerator. In any case it will not hurt to clean it.

There is a chance that the compressor relay is the problem but typically you will hear the clicking like the compressor is starting (you say you didn’t hear that). Also the relay isn’t typically an intermitting problem. You say it when back to work so whatever it is, it is intermitting. I know you don’t what to wait for this to fail again but it will be the best way to tell the problem.

When/if it happens again you need to know if the fans are running, if the compressor is running (and if it is not is it hot or room temp) and is it cooling at all?

First I would like to thank you for all your Help. I will keep an eye on it, This refrig is in the garage. I put it out there a 3+ years ago when we remodeld the kitchen. When I found the freezer door open it was ajar all night long..I thought it would be ok after I shut the door and went to work. When I got home my wife said it never go cold. I originaly thought it was iced up ? I unplugged for 1 day doors open plugged it back in nothing happened. I then started taking stuff apart the condenser coil looked like it had a sock on it thats how bad it was..! I vacuumed it off waited 1 more day as I was emailing back and forth trying to figure out what to look for plugged it back in and I heard the compressor ? checked the coils in the freezer as I still had the pannels off and the coils were starting to frost so I put it all back together and she is still working.

First I have a Whirlpool model GD2LHGXKQ00 fridge, compressor is the EGY80. My problem was originally the fridge not cooling. Found out the start relay was bad. I ordered the start relay kit (8201786). I installed the PTC relay into the top two pegs on the compressor (hooked up the white wire) and installed the overload protector (part number 2187145) into the bottom peg (hooked up the red wire). My fridge does not have the blue wire like some talk about. Too easy, right? Once I plugged the fridge back in, the fan came on, the compressor came on. The fridge was cooling again. About 15 minutes later everything went dead and there was a burning smell coming from inside the fridge. I pulled the fridge back out, took the bottom piece back off and noticed that the fan was not working nor the compressor. The compressor was hot. I opened the fridge doors and the lights came on. So the fridge was still getting power right? I checked the circuit breaker out in the garage and all fuses were good to go. None blown. I unplugged the fridge and now confused on what is next. I plugged the fridge back up after several hours and can hear a crackling noise coming from the back area where the compressor and other components are located. Should I order the kit (8201786) and try again, call the repairman, buy a compressor or a new fridge? Any suggestions on what could have possibly happened?
