My front loader Whirpool is making a banging noise during the spin cycle.
from what I have read I am probably looking at replacing the rear outer tube assembly.
Will I also need to replace the basket with the shaft?

AJ,

If you have not run the unit too long, when it started making the noise, you probably wont need the spin tub assembly.

You really won't know until you have the unit apart.

It's been my experience that nine out of ten times, you don't need the basket,if you caught it in time.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)

Thanks, will the bearing failure be very obvious?
How difficult is this repair........seems like a real PITA!!

Looks like a $200 repair if I don't need the basket.........right?

Not necessarily,

Based on the fact that you did not mention any abnormal noises, yet.

I'm considerring the bearing rollers and race are still intact but warn out, and allowing the spin basket to "wobble" and hit the outer tub in a spin cycle.

It's not a very difficult repair, but is frustrating and more time consuming than anything else.

Well, got it apart and found the bearing to be shot. After I seperated the basket from the rear tub it was apparent that there was water intrusion between the basket and tub causing the bearing to fail. The washers is just 6yrs old, should this be covered under warranty??

That's pretty bad, one of the worst I've seen.

You should check your owners manual or contact the manufacturer for warranty information.

But I don't believe you will be, due to the age of the machine ?

Good Luck,

Thanks for the reply Joe, the warranty states the basket is covered for the lifetime of the machine......I think the basket failed allowing water to access the bearing and should be covered under warranty.

What is your opinion?

Were it me,

I'd let you have it, but I don't work for the manufacturer.

Give it a try, it might just fly.
