Hello there, I have exactly the same problem. I have my dryer apart and found the rear rollers shot along with the pins the rollers revolve on. I am thinking the motor is overheating because of the increased loading of the motor.

Im thinking of replacing the rollers as well. The tumbler has a little hop to it at one point in its turn. im guessing the rollers are wearing out. What do you all think? I did notice that the left roller had more play if slided it back and forth on the shaft than the right roller does. is that normal ???
I inspected the motor and cleaned it out, but i didnt remove the motor so maybe there is more I can get at if I take it off the dryer? When I test ran it, it ran again for 20 minutes and stopped. So I took the tumbler off and tried to restart it with no load on the motor and it seems like its trying to start which is the noise I am hearing and you can see the shaft turn very slow. If I continue to attempt to start it, the motor shuts down. Is this the thermal switch you were talking about? Is it the starting mechanism failing itself? Im really hoping to avoid buying a $100 motor If i can. Is there a way to clean out the motor once I have it apart. Is it difficult to remove from the dryer???
I guess the next test is to run it with no load at all to see if the motor is truly wearing out. If it doesnt shut down, I will order the rollers.
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the switch (called a centrifugal switch) might just have seen its better days. If you can't find a used motor, you may need to replace yours with a new one. One more check you can make is at the timer. Be very careful, though, because it is a "live circuit" check, and we're dealing with a lethal voltage. Check to see if you get 120VAC between the terminals marked, "M" for motor, and "5" (an orange wire), when Run is selected. If not, I would replace the timer. If so, the motor should be replaced.

Yes I think you are right Mr. Magician. I ran the motor with no load (free spinning, no belt attached) and it heated itself up to the point where it shut down. So, i guess ill order a motor. I was thinking used, but chances are I could run into same problem. Plus, maytags site says they use a different motor now to supplement one i have, so hopefully its switch is built better.
As far as the thump it makes once around, do you think that s a roller problem? Like i said in previous post, the roller on left side slides back and forth more than one on right. So im wondering if that is what is throwing it off every time it spins. Look forward to your opinion on that.
I figure i might as well buy new parts for this one instead of buying a used one that could have potential problems.Especially since I got the Dryer for free :)

Test the rollers with the tumbler out of the cabinet. They should spin freely with minimal wobble and no noise. A periodic thump can also be caused by the tumbler slightly out of round, or even a loose baffle screw. Just visually inspect everything as you have the machine apart. The rollers aren't cheap, by any stretch, but may be a good investment to lengthen the life of the dryer.

Well, honestly i think the wobble may be my fault. I didnt realize i was holding the tumbler backwards and the lip that sits on the rollers is a lot smaller than the right side. After trying to push it on with it backwards i wonder if i messed up the one roller. Like i said they spin ok, but the left roller moves along the shaft back and forth more than the other roller does.
Do you think i damaged it?

I don't think you damaged it. You might replace the rollers, if the noise from the rollers is excessive, or bothersome.

Well there is not much noise like a squeal. Its just that the tumbler has a spot in its motion that forces it to slightly bump. I can see it with the top open and running. Wondering if the left roller is the problem since it has more motion than the right.
