Good Morning!
I have a Kenmore 417.88042700 dryer that was making a loud thumping noise. I replaced the rear drum bearing assembly and all the related parts that came in the 5303281153 kit. I also replace the belt and the pulley spring to ensure the belt was strong to the drum. The job went off without a hitch and reassembled easily. Once the dryer was started a small amount of thumping can still be heard, albeit the noise is far better than it was before the repair. My question at this point is what else can contribute to this thumping noise? The only thing I can think of at this point is perhaps the front drum Teflon glide/guide? I looked at the glide and it appeared to be in good shape. Perhaps I'm missing something else?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

LV,

Yes, you are on the right track.

I would check the front glide assembly

for loose or broken tabs, broken or missing section of the glide assembly.

Part number: AP2107932
Part number: AP2107932

And also check the drum seam and front opening for excess wear or loose weld seams.

Good Luck,
:) :) :)

Thanks for the reply Joe!

I'll have another look at the glide, lets hope its that, because given the price of a replacement drum I might as well get a new dryer!

Thanks again!

You're very welcome,

I'm thinking, you probably wont need a drum, very rare,

I'm hoping you'll find something in the seal or a loose or broken spot in the glide.

Ok, I removed the front panel and had another look, low and behold the head of a zipper was impressed in the upper felt seal! I ordered a new upper and lower felt seal for the front panel and a new glide (2) for the drum. Hopefully this will put an end to the thumping....... thanks again Joe!

Ok all went well! After replacing the upper and lower felt on the front panel and the two plastic glides on the drum she's as quiet as the day I bought it.

For anyone else trying this repair, a couple tips if I may be so bold. After removing the felt pieces from the front panel use a wire brush to clean the surface before applying the included cement (which works awesome by the way!) Pay special attention to the two felt pieces, the one that is on the top is a dark color, much thicker, and only about 1/4 the length than the white felt piece that goes on the bottom. I used a black marker to mark where the ends of the top felt piece go and installed it first.

Also the lower foam gasket by the motor is easy to remove but you are left with factory adhesive that needs to be removed. I found using a putty knife along with a hair dryer to loosen it up works great. I then used Liquid Nails Small Project glue which worked wonderful.

Anyway, all in all a success story here! Thanks again for all the help Joe!
