I have an old LA 212 Maytag washer, the timer stopped advancing on the regular cycle so we started using the delicates and knit cycle instead. I purchased a new timer from this site and with the new timer in place the washer runs but will not advance at all. In order for it to progress through the the cycle I had to move the knob by hand. I'm wondering if I have a bad new timer. I took the new one out and replaced it with the old one, the washer cycled fine through the delicates cycle. Please advise on a way to test the new timer to see if it is broken.

Thanks J, It would require a multi meter , and the wiring diagram(timer cam chart) that's located in the control console. A couple of Questions, Before you replaced the timer, where did the dial stop advancing ? Are you sure you put the correct wire(s) on the correct terminals on the new timer ? (that's the most common problem, some terminals are not in the same location on a new timer). :cool: :cool: :cool:

The washer would advance in the regular cycle using the old timer up to the point of filling for the final rinse. With the new timer, the timer never moved beyond the initial filling of the wash drum. Instead the washer would fill up then drain, then fill up again. I had to advance the timer manually to get it to move through the rest of the cycle. The pointer on the timer did not move through the entire process. I tried using the new timer in the delicate cycle as well, but it did the same thing. I'm pretty sure I got the wiring right as the numbers are printed on the wires.

J, Are you sure your drain hose is high enough,( the loop / hook of the line should be at least as high as the top of the machine or higher, it should be 37 in. off the floor). It sounds like the unit is not filling proper due to a low drain hose heigth or syphonning because the hose is sealed to the drain pipe and has no back up air to break the vaccuum on the drain system. It's not that common to have 2 components with very similar or same complaints, without there being something else wrong. As long as you're sure you have the numberred wires on the proper numberred terminals, then I can only guess and think you may have gotten a bad timer in the box, Anything is possible. If your drain hose heigth is correct and your original timer works semi proper, it may be time to check the air dome hose for clogs or pin holes or a bad water level switch. Good Luck, :) :) :)
