Please forgive if I've already posted this.
My GE side by side is 33 yrs old and has worked well until now.

The back panel inside the freezer compartment has been frosting over and then both the freezer and chiller will warm up to 50 degrees. When I unplug it and remove the inner back panel in the freezer side, I find the three vertical panels/coils are completely frosted over. I've been nursing it along by unplugging, removing the back panel, defrosting the panels/coils and then put it back together. Bingo, it works perfectly for 5 days and then I have to repeat the process. Several months ago I paid a small fortune to a general appliance repair person posing as a GE tech (don't know what he did) but the problem was not fixed and he's not allowed to come back.

PLEASE HELP as I've run out of $$$s and have to fix this myself. I'm not sure what the problem is and don't have the repair manual page to identify the parts but if fixed it will probably out live me.

Thanks and thanks again for your help.

Most likely the problem is a bad defrost heaters and/or the defrost thermostat. This is one of the most common problem with old GE refrigerators. If you need the correct part numbers, post the end of the model number.

Thanks Gene for your quick response. The model number is TFF24RVE. Bet you don't hear about too many this old. I know it's not energy efficient and all but it has served us old folks well.
Thanks

The model number you posted does not come up anywhere. Verify and repost it please.

Gene.

P.S. It's hard to believe but I've seen refrigerators made by GM, sitting in garages as a spare refrigerators. They still work!!!

Gene.....I've checked everywhere on the fridge and the only model number found is TFF24RVE. I called GE Parts and they confirmed that is a correct number and it's still in their data base on micro fisch. Since it's pre computer days, they wouldn't be able to copy any diagrams or instructions for me. She also gave me the following part nos.

Defrost Control WR9X480
Defrost Heater WR49X392
Thermostat Defrost WR50X55

Please advise and thanks much.

Looks like these part numbers are correct. The next step I would do is check the heaters and the thermostat for continuity. Most likely one of these two parts is bad, but if they both will pass the test, then the defrost timer is the culprit.

- The defrost timer Appliance Parts Pros Part number: AP2635477
Part number: AP2635477

- The defrost heater assembly Appliance Parts Pros Part number: AP2635762
Part number: AP2635762

- The defrost thermostat Appliance Parts Pros Part number: AP2639498
Part number: AP2639498

Thanks Gene. The defrost heater was supposedly changed by the repairman, (at least I saw the unit in a new box) but I don't know if it was done correctly as he had some trouble installing it. So I think I'll look at changing out the timer and thermostat first and hopefully that will do it. Does it take just one timer and one thermostat? I'll followup with ordering from this site on Monday.
Thanks, have a great weekend and I'll let you know the result of this project.

You are welcome.

You need just one of each. Good luck.

Hello Gene,

Thanks so very much for your help. The latest......I've decided to go ahead and buy a new GE fridge as old faithful developed another issue. Now we don't have ice. The tray fills and freezes but it does not tip over to release the ice cubes. So it's time to go for one of the fancy new ones.

Thanks again and keep up the good work with helping others.:) :) :)

You are welcome.

I would not buy "the fancy new one". Instead I would look for a refrigerator with no electronics. Much more reliable and will cost you much less money.
