How do I replace the pump housing assembly? I have removed the old one from the dishwasher and had to take part of the motor with it. Is there a special tool that allows you to remove the impeller from the plastic housing?

Before we go further I would like to know why are you going to replace the pump housing and what was the original problem?

Gene.

Gene.

It was leaking from the pump housing, the motor is fine.

The most common cause of such problem is a broken seal inside the pump and not a pump housing.

In order to fix it you have to order the impeller & seal kit.

Also, based on my experience, it is almost not possible to remove the disk and mount assembly (#10 on the pump and motor break down diagram).
You have to break it off (very careful not to damage the pump housing).
The old impeller has to be broken off too.

Remove the screws holding the pump housing to the motor, remove the pump housing from the motor and remove the seal from the pump housing.

Using a fine file, clean the motor shaft. Make sure the motor shaft seal head (#8 on the pump and motor break down diagram) is moving freely on the motor shaft.

- The part number for the impeller and seal kit AP3108052

- The part number for the disk and mount assembly AP2909490

- Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool dishwasher Model RUD1000KB1

Good luck.
Gene.

Thanks Gene, not exactly what I was hoping to hear, but I appreciate your response.

Hi Gene (Sorry, I know this is an old post),

I believe I am also experiencing the same issue where it is leaking in between the pump housing assembly and the motor. I have a Whirlpool DU890SWKU0 which appears to be the same as the RUD1000KB1, so I have the part numbers. I'm a novice at this but willing to try - would you happen to have step-by-step instructions on how to remove and disassemble the pump and motor parts from the dishwasher? Would I have to remove the dishwasher from under the counter to perform this fix?

Thanks!
Chris

Chris,

You have to remove the dishwasher from the cabinet and remove the lower spray arm by unscrewing the large plastic nut first. Put the dishwasher on its right side. Be prepared to catch some water from the dishwasher. It is pretty visible how to remove the pump assembly from the dishwasher. As the next step you can use the instructions from the previous reply.

Gene.
