I have a Hotpoint dryer 15+ years old. Recently it started overheating and shutting down. After cooling for 20 - 30 minutes it would restart. I took unit apart and vacuumed inside as best as I could etc pulling drum out to get to excess lint. After a few weeks, it has started shutting down again. I'm thinking it might be a thermostat problem but then I'm not a repairman but just one who hates to spend $$ on a new unit if I can salvage the existing one. First any idea on how to proceed or is my unit finally too old to mess with? When overheating, the control panel seems fairly hot. Thanks for any help.

Your symptoms are those of a motor that is in the process of failing.

If cleaning it out did not fix the problem, the motor would need to be replaced, but given the age of the machine I suggest your money is better spent on a new basic machine, or a good used machine. I strongly prefer used dryers, they last a long time, dryers are pretty easy to fix and technology has not made any real advances except making the expensive new ones more complex and more prone to failure.
