We have a 6 yr/old kenmore elite side by side. We noticed that the milk kept going bad and the ice cream (freezer side) was getting soft. I thoroughly cleaned off the coils underneath which helped. The temp of the frige is set at 37 and it gets down to about 38-39 if the door is kept shut. Our biggest concern at this point is the compressor is getting extremely hot. Currenly we are blowing a house fan on the compressor to keep it cooler. Still hot but not a fire hazzard at this point in my opinion with use of the additional fan. We did try turning off the referigerator for a night (with use of the additional fan) and re-starting in the a.m. Unfortunately the above stated problem returned. Do you guys have any suggestions to try to figure this out? Thank you in advance.

Post the freezer temperature and post. Also, remove the freezer back panel and describe the frost pattern.

Sorry about the delay. I was out of town for a while and then had some computer issues. The freezer is holding temp. fine (if not zero, it's close too it). The coils (or whatever you call them in the back of the freezer) are all frosted over, with the exception of a black coil that loops down and around. Also I noticed the divider wall between the freezer and the fridge is quite warm as well.
I did notice that the compressor is less hot at times than others (likely due to the cycle it is in I'm guessing).
Is this possibly just low on freon? Or compressor, or what? Thanks in advance!

Is your condensing motor running in the back by the compressor (2188874)?
Need an accurate freezer temp to determine if you have a refrigeration problem.
