I am replacing the timer (like many other people on this forum) on my Sears Kenmore electric dryer model 110.69722800. I am having difficulty removing the endcaps from the control panel, which I believe I need to do to get to the timer. Can someone let me know how to do this, or direct me to detailed instructions on replacing the timer on this model?

No, you do not have to take the end caps off. Here is what I want you to do. On this dryer the whole control panel will flip up for easy access. So get a putty knife, and slide it under the control panel on the right side. That is between the top and the bottom of the control panel, right on the end. Slide the putty knife under there, and you will hit a clip that will release the control panel from the top on that side. Then do the same on the other side, and then flip back the control panel, and you will have access to change the timer. Let me know how it goes. Tom ApplianceEducator.com - Parts

But there's a preliminary step not described, right? There's a sheet metal panel on the back of the console (through which the power cord passes) that apparently has to be removed in order for the console to tip back. I have removed the four screws at the bottom and freed the two plastic clips above them, but something is still holding that panel in place. What else do I need to do?

I do remember removing the four screws at the bottom of the sheet metal rear panel, as well as the two screws near the top (you just need to unscrew those two screws near the top, not free the plastic part). Did you remove all of the knobs on the control panel? They just pull out, somewhat stiffly. And make certain that you really did insert the putty knife far enough. What you are doing with the putty knife is to go under a rather stiff spring-like U-shaped clip (it's number 14 on the Sears parts page). Try to keep your putty knife positioned so that it stays down, close to the top of the main part of the dryer, not near the bottom of the control panel. You'll have to push pretty hard to free the clip.

Good luck!
