My refrigerator stopped cooling the beginning of the month. First the ice started having a bad taste. I could hear a fan running but not any sound from the compressor. I live in a small town. So not many repair shop options. I called one of the two repair places here. I explain what was going on. The guy said it would be $55.00 to come and check the refrigerator. So I told him that would be fine. :) The repair person came pulled off the back of refrigerator and told me it was probably a bad compressor. Since it didn't come on. Then he tells me the only way to know is to use a part called a 3 in 1 jump start. So I'm like sure fine :) He tells me he doesn't have any with him but he expected the part to come in the next day or two. Then he informs me that to do a test with this part I would have to purchase it for $49.00 and of coarse his labor of $89.00. I was astonished.:eek:I may be wrong but how can you charge a client for something you need to check their appliance with  ??? The parts he had on order were not for me. He said there was no other way to be sure the compressor was dead. I said okay figuring I would have time to do research on what he was telling me. Not even 10 minutes later he calls me all happy :D about how he got back to the shop and low and behold magically the part just happened to be lying around in the shop. So then they send a different repair man over with a better gift of gab  He explained to me how the part worked. I ask him again about why don't they have their own testing parts ??? Same response it's the only way to check the compressor. He also added that once he open the Magic Part package it's a done deal. Regardless if it activates the compressor or not. Being desperate what could I do :( ??? I'm sure you already know what happened. So that was that. I'm now a Slave to Renta-Center  . Since I'm on disability for a few months. If what they did and said is proper business. Fine:mad:!!! I'll eat the cost and maybe this gnawing feeling I have will dissipate. At this point I feel they should at least offer to move the broken refrigerator to my garage. How can you drive 1 mile spend all of 15 minutes and take a check for doing nothing.:mad:They didn't even put the furry part back on the refrigerator. I just need the answer to "Have I Been Had" ??? Sorry to write a Grimm's Story :( I just wanted to be clear to ensure the proper answer. Thanks Peace :)

As for the $89 dollar labor charge, this is not out of line. This is assuming that the old start relay was bad. I wouldn’t have charged you for the start relay but I can see where he is coming from. In some cases the compressor will cause a start relay to fail so if your compressor damages the new start relay then he can’t use the relay again and he is out a $50 dollar part. In most cases you can get by with taking back off and reselling it but it is risky and not the best idea. You wouldn’t want a part that he had on someone else’s refrigerator. With that being said I would have just taken the part as a loss. As for the part where he says that the only way to know for sure is to replace the relay. I don’t necessarily disagree with this. While it is not the only way to know it is certainly the simple way. I think he made it sound as if it were a part strictly for testing. When what he really should have said was if the relay doesn’t fix it you would be looking at a bad compressor. I have an idea the start relay on your refrigerator was bad and he was thinking that he would replace the relay and if that doesn’t work then the compressor is bad. If the old start relay wasn’t bad. Now if the old start relay wasn’t bad and he just figured that a 3 in one start kit may repair the problem then you shouldn’t have to pay for the start relay for sure because he should have know better. He should know that if the factory relay will not start the compressor the compressor is bad. If the start relay wasn’t bad and the 3-in-one did start the compressor the repair would be temporary. If this were the case then if I were you I would pay him the $89. The only problem with this is it will be hard to prove if the old start relay was bad or not. What this all boils down to is if the old start relay was bad then he really didn’t do anything wrong. (besides using a 3-in-1, which should only be used if the correct relay is discontinued which is beside the point) However if the old start relay was not bad he should not have even tried the 3-in-one. This is just my view of you situation. I wouldn’t testify in court. :) Refrigerator repair guide

I would NEVER use a 3n 1 start device, it has a sad history of burning out compressor windings and cause the failure of the adaptive defrost board. These comments apply to the newer fractional hp compressors, may be ok on higher hp compressors. For complete info, use the refrigerator repair search box and put in "are 3 n 1 relays that bad", go to page 3
