It could be the compressor pulls to much amperage and it caused it to fail or it could be it just failed, voltage surge, wore out, etc. If you had a compressor analyzer and an amp meter you could test the compressor before you put a relay on it, but they are kind of specialized test equipment. So your best bet is to try a new relay part AP3885081.
