Hello, I have a GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800. Recently, unit began making unusual noise, beside the normal sound it makes while being used. Also, does not heat and creates a chemical like smell. Any suggestions on the cause of the issues? Any way to test, if appliciable? Could you provide model number of part that might be needed. Thanks Andy

Hi Andy, One of the most common problem with such GE microwaves is a bad magnetron (#61 on the diagram). The second part which can cause it is a high voltage diode (#77). Very possible that the both parts have to be replaced. The microwave has to be removed from the cabinet for the tests and/or repair. The worst thing about magnetron is that even it would pass the continuity test, it still can be bad with very high chance for it. The magnetron has to be tested for continuity between each terminal and ground. The correct reading suppose to be ∞. Prior to work with the microwave you have to discharge the high voltage capacitor. The instructions on how to test the diode you can find in one of our previous threads: http://forum.appliancepartspros...19868-diode-testing.html - The magnetron Part number: AP2025937
