Got a 5 year old NeptuneTL. The clothes are soaked after a wash cycle.

Thanks to previous threads, I've downloaded the service manual and did quite a bit of checking. Here is what I've got so far.

Belt is intact and spins with the motor. I can manually move the belt BOTH directions. But I cannot move the agitators inside the washer manually. Should I be able to?

I have done the spin test, which comes out fine.

There are NO error codes listed right now. There were a few, but I stupidly pushed "clear" thinking: They will show up again if there is a problem. Duh!

I took out the agitators and the plastic thing underneath them. They were FILTHY with mud. (I got this thing off Craig's list. Hope I did not get taken).

Wiped it down, and put it back together.

Oh, pump works fine. Is the first thing I checked.

Saw the thread about taking apart the clutch and lubing it. Is this what I need to so? What else should I be looking at?

Is it possible this thing is full of mud and just won't spin? Water comes out clean.

If I have to remove the clutch, the other thread with the great pics has me wondering if I can do it with the machine still standing on the floor. Taking it in/out of the laundry room is neary impossible!

Any help is most greatly appreciated.

Thanks
David

Got some more info. Discovered the agitators move during a spin test. The entire drum is not moving.

Thanks

Good Info David

From what you describe we are going to focus on the Clutch Pulley.

What are the 1st two digits of your FAV6800A serial number located on the Console Back right hand side as you view the machine from the front. Maybe you can use a small hand mirror to read. It will be 10, 11, 12 thru 17 that is the series of the machine.

OK if you place the machine in a Spin Only Cycle and raise the Washer Top from the Base to observer the wash basket you see the Tumblers Rotating and the Wash Basket is not rotating CCW/Spin Direction is that correct?

If so I feel the large Wrap Stainless Steel spring is broken in the Clutch Pulley housing. The cause maybe that the Spinner Shaft Coupler (what I call it) is rusted solid in the Clutch Pulley. I feel it’s time to drop out the Clutch Pulley and inspect as I called out in this post; Maytag Neptune load unbalance

Yes you can remove the Clutch Pulley with the machine standing upright it’s just a very tight work area. I recommend to lay the machine down on the rear panel blocked up slightly as I described in the above post.....but if you don’t have the room and you are a bit more agile than me it can be done I have done it many times.

If you have to replace the Clutch Pulley I would go with this Clutch Pulley AP4310552 .

Let me know if I can help………Dick

Thanks for the info. I'll get the clutch torn out as soon as I can.

I looked, the first 2 numbers of the SN are 10. I know that means something, but am drawing a blank today.

Again, thanks

More info! Got the clutch out. Dang thing is rusted pretty bad (no pics, camera is still boxed from my move). Got the plastic cover off -- metal band is not broken! Is a little rusty, but nothing that can't clean off.

To get the sleave out of the bearings (that thing with the little butterfly-like pieces, I'm going to have to put penetrating oil on it and then probably beat it out of there.

I need to walk away from this for the night. Will look at it again tomorrow.

Again, thanks for everything!

David,

You have a Series 10 machine

Was there any indication of water dripping on top of the Clutch Pulley when you removed it?

If not I would replace the clutch pulley from the amount of rust you describe. I feel it’s not worth effort to clean up based on your observation.

That Spinner Shaft coupler should slip right of the Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutch bearing.

Here is a pic of the three parts of a Clutch Pulley with mild rust pulled from my Series 10 machine like yours and some pics after clean up. This Clutch Pulley was salvageable.

Good idea to walk away for a bit. Again if there is no sign of water leakage on the top of the Clutch Pulley a replacement should get you back in service.......Dick

Dave I want to make sure of I'm clear this troubleshooting step you performed what you observed.

“”Got some more info. Discovered the agitators move during a spin test. The entire drum is not moving.””

I assumed you were in the Quick Spin Test…… While in Service Mode, select the Quick Spin Test
option. Page 23 of the Service Manual…….. is that correct?

If that was the test you were in and observed “” Discovered the agitators move during a spin test. The entire drum is not moving.””……….. I assume the Outer Tub bearings are not seized. If the Wash Basket can be rotated by hand CCW they are not seized………the only way that the tumblers will rotate while motor is rotating the clutch Pulley CCW (the Spin direction) is to have the large wrap spring not compress as the Motor starts turning the Clutch Pulley CCW the Spin direction.

With my limited hands on knowledge this can be caused by either parted/broken Large Wrap Spring in the Clutch Pulley housing. One of the two retaining pins is not securing the Large Wrap Spring in the Clutch Pulley housing or the spring loops have been stretched straight because of Outer Tub bearing seizure preventing the Spinner Support from rotating freely in the Outer Tub bearings.

Is the seized Spinner Shaft Coupler in the Upper One-Way roller Clutch bearing or the Clutch Pulley mounted One-Way Roller Clutch bearing or both as one seized mass.

I feel if you could clean the parts up and get the Spinner Shaft Coupler to rotate freely CW in the bearing assemblies and Lock Up solid (One-Way Roller Clutch Bearing) in the CCW spin Cycle direction it would just be a short time before dc/uC unbalance errors would return because of the bearings failing or an issues like the Wash Basket rotating CW in wash cycle (CW Clutch Pulley rotation).

I feel the best way DIY owners of the FAV6800A/FAV9800A machine can understand and troubleshoot dC/uC unbalance error codes is to understand how the One-Way Roller Clutch bearings used in these two machines are designed to work. Did you read in this post Maytag Neptune load unbalance this date stamp 12-28-2009, 11:25 PM “”One last step before you clean up those pesky Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches/bearing.””

Once you understand how the One-Way Roller Clutches bearing works troubleshooting becomes a bit easier.

I don’t want to overwhelm you with info. Just do as you are slow steady pace and you will get thru this. Keep in mind you may have a slight Tub Seal leak that I feel is the root cause of the extreme rusted mass of your Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches bearing. You can replace the Tub Seal if this is an issue you want to take on to extend the service life of your machine at low cost. It all comes down to your cut off point………Dick

This is correct. I did the quick spin test with the top part "off" -- lid locked, but entire top of machine open.

I cannot rotate the outer tub, nor the agitators, by hand. Either direction.

I was able to take the thing apart. However, when I was trying to remove the bearing assembly itself, I broke the white plastic part. Ooops! Guess who is on the phone right now ordering a new one? :)

I will keep an eye on the machine to see if there is a leak. i don't know if the previous owner had stored the thing outside or what.

So I called and the part that was recommended for the 10 series is this one at twice the price of the other. Is there a difference in the parts?

The other info has been helpful. Since I broke the part, some of it becomes a mute point. Though offering up the other pieces to anyone who can use them becomes possible.

The cheaper one for sure unless someone can tell me why the $2X is worth $2X? I use this one AP4310552

Try the little test when you get your new Clutch Pulley. I would recommend you re-lube the new one when it arrives both the Upper Ring and the Clutch Pulley mounted One-Way Roller Clutch bearing.

Got to cut my response I'm on lunch break at work.......Dick
