After selecting cycle and the washer filling with water the timer steps to the wash/agitate cycle--at that point is sounds as though motor is trying to start(hummmm) but, does not and it over heats and cuts off automatically. After it cools off it will restart, but, will repeat the same thing. If the timer dial is turned to final spin the water pump will drain the water and the motor will kick in to spin the the rest of the water out of the tub. I thought at first it was the capacitor on the motor, but, since it runs on the final spin it doesn't seem to be the problem.
Any suggestions?

It is common for the tranny to lock up on these, confirm by turning the tranny pulley in the agitate direction.

I turn the pulley and the trans turns, it also spins the water from the tub

Thanks for your assistance. No noises. Considering the price of new trans and the labor of a service person, plus the extended inconvienience, I just went to Lowe'sand perchased a new one for $776.00. With free delivery hook-up and take-away $77.60 for another ten years isn't bad.
Thanks again
