Loud "purring" noise seems to come from top area of freezer side where icemaker motor is, I guess. I checked the condenser and fan below, in back, and the noise is not coming from there. I just turned the ice maker back on so it may be too soon to see if ice is making. But the noise started yesterday and I turned off the ice maker and emptied the ice out.
Manual says, by the way, that the condenser doesn't need to be cleaned but it was quite dusty so I vacuumed that off. Refrigerator bought by previous owner in 2002. thanks for any suggestions.

Remove the cover from the ice maker. Check the teeth on the largest gear. Look close if one tooth is missing you can have problems. I suspect your ice makers heater is not working and the main gear is making the racket because the ice is not getting loose quick enough. It may be time for a new ice maker.

I will try this tomorrow afternoon. I don't know why an icemaker would 'die' after only 6 years though. Having replaced one in a 10 year old refrigerator, I know they are very expensive. Thanks. will check back if there is no missing tooth.

No, don't remove the front cover of the icemaker. This is an electronic Ice maker, and no replaceable parts on the inside like the older mechanical icemakers. Instead, do this to verify if the noise is coming from the icemaker. First, turn the icemaker off, with the on/off switch. Leave off for 30 seconds. Now turn the switch back on and push the paddle back 3 times within 5 seconds. This puts the icemaker into a cycle. after the rakes have started moving touch the bottom of the icemaker to see if the heater is coming on,may take just a bit for the heater to come on, but be very carefull, it gets very hot!!! If no heat, replace icemaker. if just noisy, leave as is until it breaks for good, or replace icemaker.

I too have this problem on a 2.5 year old unit.

What is the "paddle?"

Let me know.
