I purchased and received from APP a new fresh food door gasket. I searched the forum and installed the gasket 2 times, 2 different ways. My door at the lower left edge of door will not meet the frame. I tried to readjust the door, because it was crooked, and noticed that one of the bolts that holds the door hinge at the bottom right of the door is stripped. I think that the hinge is bent, too, thus my door is way off! What exactly do I need to order......and how do I install a new hinge? Can I even do this myself?

Thank you for your time and help!

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for General Electric TFX27FLB Refrigerator | AppliancePartsPros.com

Check the cam riser on the door to make sure it is OK (Item 16 in Section 1).
if cracked or broken order one.

You will need a new lower hinge (Item 451 in Section 4). It has a cam riser on it.

Then you will have to determine if the bolt (Item 552 in Section 4) or the nut strip (Item 452 in Section 4) is stripped and order what you need.

Click on the part's picture to get a better view or to expand it.

If you can install the door gasket you should be able to do this.
Remove all food from the door.
Check at the lower hinge just in case there are wires going up into the door that I do not know about.
Remove the upper hinge.
Then you should be able to lift off the door so you can replace the lower hinge.
It is nice to have an extra pair of hands when you do this.

Okay...I can order those parts. On the top, I took a cover off and saw wires going down into the door, but I didn't see them on the lower hinge. I unloosened them slightly at the top and slightly at the bottom. I used a few 2 by 4's under the door and told my husband to lift the door up but slightly push his foot up against the lower left bottom. I tightened the bolts one by one..and the door dropped down again. Slightly, but enough to not do what I wanted it to do. This fridge is huge. I'm not sure what to do now. :(

Try gently pulling the wires out of the door.
There should be a plug in there so you can disconnect them.
Or it may be in the unit's frame.
Hopefully someone who knows for sure will jump in and help.
It is a good idea to kill power to the unit when doing this.
Since it is so big probably easiest to trip the breaker.

Trying to replace the lower hinge while balancing the door would be a real pain.

Thank you, Mr. denman. APP is out of item #451, so I think I may have to just order it from Sears and have them come out at install it. I'm afraid I might do something and the door falls off and lands on top of me. Like I mentioned, this fridge is monstrous.

Thanks so much for your help, though. I really appreciate it.

What exactly is "flexing the door?" I think when I was installing the gasket, it was pushing the door backwards (don't know how to explain it.) Is that possible for me to do and will that help?

I think they must mean that you push hard enough on the door to actually bend is so that it is not flat anymore.

Unless the door is really cheaply put together this is a difficult thing to do. I would not try to straighten a door on the hinges due to the amount of force it will take.

Okay, I won't try the flexing. :) I went ahead and ordered the 451, two different 452's and a 552 pack of bolts. The stripped part is actually where one of the bolts on the hinge that screws into the bottom right body of the fridge itself. In otherwords, the bolt is fine, it's stripped inside the female part of the fridge itself. I didn't do it, so it had to have been Sears when I bought the thing some 20+ years ago, because we never touched it.

One other question. I am installing the dual solenoid ice/water thing in the bottom back of fridge. (it was leaking) The new part is different and I can't understand the instructions. Only thing I can't understand is how do I put my Original bracket on this thing. This is what the instructions read:

1. Remove existing valve with mounting bracket from unit. (DONE)
2. Remove mounting bracket from old valve. (DONE)
3. Bend the bracket of NEW valve up slightly, allowing a gap between the bracket
and the valve body. (????) It looks like it came already bent, so not sure what they want.
4. Reinstall screw from bottom up through OLD bracket into NEW. (confusing me)
5. Reinstall new valve assembly in unit. (i can do this once I figure out #4)

it looks like they want you to add my old bracket on top of their bracket. Also, does it matter if the 3 water lines (2 plastic and 1 copper) face on top or bottom?

Thank you Mr. denman! :)

Cannot be of much help here getting any decent tech info fronm GE is next to impossible. I think they like to keep their techs busy.

3. Bend the bracket of NEW valve up slightly, allowing a gap between the bracket and the valve body. (????) It looks like it came already bent, so not sure what they want.
It may already be bent. A lot of times manufactures change parts and do not bother changing the install directions
.
4. Reinstall screw from bottom up through OLD bracket into NEW. (confusing me)

The way I interpret this is that the new bracket goes next to the unit's frame and then the old bracket. Why is beyond me.

Also, does it matter if the 3 water lines (2 plastic and 1 copper) face on top or bottom?
If possible put the new valve in the same orientation as the old. The length of the water tubes and wiring may determine that the valve will only connect in one way. It should make no difference in operation as far as the valve goes.

Thank you for your help, Mr. denman. There was no way that I could use my original bracket with the replacement. Wasn't gonna happen.

I did have to remove that white plastic shroud that was on the replacement, though. It just wouldn't fit into my spot without causing other problems. I pulled it off and threw it across the room! :) Another problem was the copper water line! My original had a flare mount nut and the replacement came with a compression thread. I didn't notice it at first and couldn't figure out why my nut wouldn't screw onto their fitting. Very frustrating for about 45 minutes until I figured it out! Everything's hooked up and working, but I will not push the fridge back in until tomorrow. Just want to make sure there are NO leaks.

Now I wait for my new hinge parts and I'll probably be back! :)

Thanks again, and take care.

Glad to hear you beat it.

Sounds like you have successfully completed a Jiggery Pokery, often the only way to get things fixed.
