Subject: Condenser Fan Motor Replacement P/N 240397101 shaft is different than original motor and will not hold the fan straight

The condenser fan motor for my Frigidaire PLRS267ZAB5 was intermittent so I ordered a replacement from AppliancePartsPro.com. The original P/N 24033401 is discontinued and I received replacement P/N 240397101. The shaft on the new motor is different than the original and I can’t see a way to attach the fan using the existing hardware in a manner which will secure the fan properly so that is does not wobble.

I’ve enclosed a picture with the original P/N 24033401 on the left and the new P/N 240397101 on the right. I’ve also enclosed a system diagram that shows the assembly of the motor (60), the grommet silencer (61B), fan blade (61) and speed nut (61A). The silencer and speed nut are also in the picture in front of the motors.

The original motor has a spacer on the shaft with a flat face to mount the silencer and fan blade. The replacement motor does not have the spacer but instead has a pin pressed into the shaft (which is slightly below the deck height of the spacer on the original motor). The silencer is rubber and will not be held in place by just the pin, it will need a flat surface like the original motor spacer. I tried to pull the spacer off the old motor, but it will not come off without damage. Also, the diagram doesn’t show the spacer as a separate part and the pin on the new motor shaft would interfere with the spacer, so reusing the old space doesn’t seem like the right solution. So the problem is it is impossible to reassemble the components on the new motor in a manner that will hold the fan straight without wobbling.

I suspected there must be a replacement fan blade or spacer that is matched to the shaft on the new motor. I called AppliancePartsPro.com who says that only the motor P/N has been superseded and that none of the other parts have changed. I was told to post this problem on this forum. This seems like a parts problem rather than service but I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks for your interest.

Jack

AppliancePartsPros.com customer service has been very helpful trying to resolve this problem, including working with their research team, shipping a replacement motor and also a universal motor as well as contacting the manufacturer. In the end the manufacturer states that P/N 240397101 is the correct substitute part and that none of the other parts in the assembly or the method of assembly shown in the system diagram has changed in order to accommodate this substitute motor.

However, it is not possible to reassemble the components on the new motor in a manner that will hold the fan straight without wobbling. Specifically, the grommet silencer (61B) is to be placed on the shaft between the blade and the motor. The silencer is made of rubber and slips past the shaft pin when the speed nut is tightened. The silencer requires a larger surface than just the pin to support it. I tried attaching the fan blade without the silencer but there is too large of a gap between the threads on the shaft and the pin so the speed nut can not be tightened securely against the blade. I also tried to put the silencer on the other side of the blade between the speed nut and the blade. I could tighten the speed nut but the blade rocks on the pin and wobbles hitting the motor. The crux of the problem is that a larger bearing surface than just the pin is required to hold the fan blade securely.

To resolve this problem I added a 1-1/4” washer between the pin on the shaft motor and the silencer (61B). I drilled the center hole of the washer to 1/4" so it is a press fit on the motor shaft. I slotted the washer with a dremel so that the pin on the motor shaft will sit in the slot on the washer. (The slot on the washer may not be necessary but it does provide a larger bearing surface for the pin). It is important that the slots are the same depth on both sides of the center hole so that the washer sits straight on the motor shaft. Enclosed is a picture of the silencer, slotted washer and motor shaft.

I placed the washer on the motor shaft with the pin sitting in the slot in the washer, then assembled the grommet silencer (61B), fan blade (61) and speed nut (61A) as shown on the system diagram. Pictures enclosed. I made sure wide flanges of the speed nut were perpendicular to the pin in the shaft in order to add stability to the fan blade in two dimensions. This worked for me and the blade is held securely on the shaft motor without wobbling.

I suspect the manufacturer will at some point will recognize that an alternative assembly or a part that works with the pin on the motor shaft is required.

Thanks again to Nancy M at AppliancePartsPros.com Customer Service for all of her help.

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your diagnosis and repair with us. It is not often we see a such problem with a new motor, so your post was very illuminating and instructive.

Thanks again, and good luck with your refrigerator.
