I have a 5 y.o. (but very lightly used) Kenmore electric range (flat top, convection oven) which stopped working this weekend (sorry, I don't have the model number on me right now). After considerable troubleshooting (cycling the breaker, plugging and reconnecting wires and flex, etc), we have determined that the electronic control (part number 316418702) needs to be replaced. The error code is F11 (keypad short). I have a few questions:
(1) The problem seems to be in the membrane switch part of the control unit. Is it possible to replace just that or is it necessary to replace the entire unit?
(2) The external keypad cover is a separate part, 316419802. It is held on with some kind of adhesive - probably PSA, but it seems to be possible to peel it off. Can the old one be transferred or does it need to be replaced as well? Should I apply new adhesive, and if so what is recommended?
(3) Is there any other repair/replacement we should try before shelling out 20% of the cost of the range for parts? Is there a likely cause for this failure which we should watch out for in the future?

That means the correction is to replace the control board. (2) The overlay is self-adhesive. You can try to peel it off (it can be easy damaged) and reuse, but I do not know how you can glue it on the new part. The new overlay is not expensive and it's better to order a new one. (3) I do not think you have to replace anything else at this point. There is nothing you can do to prevent it in the future.
