Hello,

I have an RC20K-3AW Magic Chef Fridge (19 years old). It works fine, except the dividing wall at the front in between the fridge and freezer has been heating up a great deal. It now actually hurts when touched. Any idea what the problem may be? What part may need a replacement?

Thanks ahead,

G'day
Greg

Looks like you may be missing a digit after the K.

Often this is a problem with removing the heat from the condenser coils under the unit.

Clean the coils and the fan blade.
Looks like the coils are what is called a jelly roll type.
I do not know if you can do this but I remove the front kick plate and the rear cover. Then roll the unit to an open door and blow them clean with a compressor. Most of the dust ends up outside.
I also understand that a leaf blower works well.
If not possible a long brush and a vacuum can be used.
Removing the fan will make this a little easier.

Also check that the condenser fan is running correctly.

Some units have what is usually called an Econo switch (or something like that). If yours has this turn it off.

If the center divider is hot, it is definetly an air movent problem. If the coil in the front is not dirty. Pull the refrigerator out, and take the bottom back panel off, and see if the condenser motor, which is next to the compressor is running. The blade could be blocked, and not turning, Or, the motor is bad,, or turning slow. Tom [url]www.applianceeducator.com/parts.htm

Thank you for the replies, denman and Tom. You gentlemen were absolutely right, and very helpful. The coil was packed with dust and dirt, and as Tom suspected, the motor was dead. Once again, thank you very much for your help. Much appreciated. G'day Greg
