I have a GE Profile washer, and lately it has been making an audible "clunk" when agitating. A little more investeigation, and running it with the lid up revealed that the drum is locked in to the agitator in all phases of the cycle. They are not ceased together, the agitator as a few degrees of freedom before the drum gets picked up. Not knowing any better, it's almost like their linked up the way you would expect as part of the spin cycle.

I recall running it once with the lid up a couple years ago, mostly because it's so quiet i wanted to make sure it was actually working (It was). At that time the agitator rotated free of the drum (at least that's what I recall.)

Any thoughts?

thanks

Sounds like the problem is a bad shaft & mode shifter (#320 on the diagram). Remove the washer front panel and check the status of the green LED on top of the motor. Post the results.

Thank you for the fast reply, I'll check tonight and post.

If that is the issue, it looks like the drum assy must be lifted off, is that the case? Can the frame holding the mechanicals be disconnected from the shocks and dropped out the bottom?

Thanks again

What is the complete model number of the washer?

What exactly is the problem?

This error code means "Mode shift circuit failed". The correction is to replace the shaft & mode shifter together with the motor. You also will need a drive belt installation tool.

- The shaft & mode shifter assembly Part number: AP4380186
Part number: AP4380186

- The motor Part number: AP4368247
Part number: AP4368247

- The belt installation tool Part number: AP3968441
Part number: AP3968441

ok, thank you, that is a bunch of money that i was not prepared for. The unit was bought in 07 so i think i'm gonna make a warranty call. $90 for the shaft assy was in the range, but 300 is a call to GE.

thanks

I found this on a related thread

Usually this will cause the entire tub to rotate during wash rather than just the agitator. Look on the board on top of the motor and you should see a wire going to the sifter (the tube that goes up through the center of the tub). Disconnect that wire and test for continuity between the two wires. If it is open the shifter coil is bad. This page will explain more HydroWave GE Washer Repair Guide

In my case the drum and agitator are spinning together as well, and the motor is running fine. is it possible that i only need the shifter coil. I looks like APP has it in stock and it can ship tomorrow??
