I replaced several things including the rollers. One roller (above motor) has an inch or two of travel on its shaft; I can slide the roller back to the bulkhead and forward again. This is what it's been doing since I replaced it, and not only has it worn a 2" band of paint off the drum, it has generated quite a pile of fine metal shavings all over the inside of the dryer! This caused a short and melted the wire that goes from the motor to the heating coils. Ask me how dumb I feel. (Actually the arc managed to burn a small chunk out of the drum itself, which is relatively far away. I guess I inadvertently made a small Jacob's Ladder!)

My question is what part is supposed to keep the roller in position? The shaft is quite long and the space between clips is mnuch wider than the roller's bearing. I don't see anyhting in the parts diagram that seems to server that purpose. I thought maybe I should have a different pulley on the right side -- one that's wider, but not according to the diagram / parts list. Anyone who remembers how these dryers are set up, can you clue me in? My house is full of hanging wet laundry and the wife is going to get unpleasant soon!

Here is the parts breakdown
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL LER7646EQ2 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Take a look at Section 3.
If you click on the parts picture a new page will open often with a better view.

It should free wheel more that the left side. Compare the two roller shafts Items 42 and 43.

I would take a look and find out exactly where those shavings are coming from. Sounds like there is a problem with the right side roller or shaft. The roller should rotate easily so should not create shavings. I would replace both.

It freewheels between the tri-rings (Item 41). One at the front and one at the back.

The rollers are the same.

Also check that the front bearing rings etc. are OK, perhaps the drum is twisted to the right of left and is causing a problem.

Thanks for the quick response. I am confused about the shavings. I am sure they must have come from the right shaft or roller, but neither looks particularly chewed up. And there was a LOT of powdered metal in there. I have ordered the roller kit and the right shaft as well, but I have no idea how to replace the shaft. There's nothing to grab to unscrew it. I'm sure I could get it out eventually, but getting the new one in without chewing it up might be difficult. Any suggestions on how to install it without damaging it?

Also, what lubricant, if any, should I use between the shaft and roller?

The roller on that side does move, but only a little bit so sounds like there is too much play in yours. I don't know why, have never seen that but see if this part will help, and if not check out the other parts and replace them all. It is not expensive.

Part number: AP2997462

The knocking was not from the support roller. It was the motor flopping back and forth and hitting the drum. The frame of the motor (aluminum? Magnesium? I reeeeally hope aluminum.) was whacking against the drum, and the drum, being steel, was shaving the soft motor frame down every time. The motor frame is still structurally sound, but I need to determine why it was hitting the drum.

Question:
Should the motor be able to pivot in its mount once the motor is clamped in? It doesn't seem like there is anything keeping it from rocking back and forth. If it shouldn't, what should keep it in place?

The motor mount clips should hold it from rotating.

I am at a loss as to what is going on here.

Wow, I don't know why I didn't see this before, but in hindsight it seems obvious. The faulty part was in fact THE DRYER. I replaced that one thing and everything works perfectly now.
hahaha

Seriously though, I put this thing back together and ran it empty, and was satisfied that it was no longer knocking. As soon as we put some clothes in, the motor started rocking and 240v at 30a arced from the motor to the drum, leaving copper deposits every so often in a circle around the drum and, at one spot, burning a hole straight through the drum.

The root cause was the motor mount not holding the motor in place. This happened after I replaced the motor. READERS: I did NOT buy the motor from applicancepartspros, so don't think they had any hand in my problems. :) (Just want to make sure there's no confusion about that.)

I did buy the other parts here, and those parts worked perfectly.
