I have a Magic Chef side by side fridge that is giving me problems. Started out the fridge side was not cooling enough. The freezer seems ok. I took the back off of the inside of the freezer and there was some icing on the coils, but not much. more like frost. I manually defrosted it and plugged it back in. Still didn't seem to be cooling in the fridge. So I left it plugged up all night and the next morning it wasn't running. THe light was off in the frigde. I unplugged it and replugged and it started up. While it was plugged up I turned the temp control off in the fridge and back on. The compressor tried to kick on the the lighte dimmed. It failed to start. I then unplugged the frigde and turned the temp control back up them plugged it up and it would run ok. Still not cooling. Could it be a thermostat? Or the defrost system. Just seems wierd to me. Would appreciate any help. I'd rather fix this myself if possible to save a little money. Thanks, Bryan

Bryan,
You have to wait at least 15 minutes after you turned the refrigerator off (unplugged the power cord, turned the cold control off etc) before you can turn it back on. Otherwise it can damage the compressor.
Leave it off for a while and turn it on. If the compressor will start normally, set the cold control in a middle setting and monitor the refrigerator for a few days. Post the results.
What is the complete model number of the refrigerator?
Gene.

Ok. I'll get that model number when I get home from work. What would cause it to shut off on it's own after running all evening and into the night?

How long it stays off?
Does it restart by itself?

Well. It had ran for 4 to 6 hours yesterday evening and hadn't really gotten cold. I went to bed and the next morning it was off. The light in the fridge was off like you'e turned to thermostat off. It was'nt cold at all so I'd say it had been off for a several hours. That's when I unplugged it and replugged it and it came on again. So I just left it unplugged until I could find out what could cause that. Didn't want to leave it on when I wasn't home thinking it could catch fire or something.

The lights inside the refrigerator should not go off while the power cord is plugged in. Might be something wrong with the power source?

I have a tester. I'll check the outlet out tonight as well to see if it's putting out 120 volts.
Thanks,

I did find out that the outlet quit working for some reason. Another problem....that's all I need. Anyway. The part number is GS20Y8D. I have started it back up on another outlet. I couldn't feel much flow coming into the refrigerator anywhere. It has a freezer temperature control on the left side inside the fridge. I turned the freezer down which opened a damper and lets more cold air into the fridge. This was the only place I could find cold air coming in. Shouldn't there be another damper that is controlled by the fridge temp control? I'll let it run all night and see if it's any better.
Thanks,
