Original Problem: Washer won't spin. Started getting week and progressively got worse and now won't spin at all.

Okay, I spent much time reading throughout the internet and decided that my problem must be either the clutch or drive tube (basket drive). So I decided to replace both. Was able to rule out every other option. The motor runs and the clutch just spins away without spining the drive tube. I replaced the clutch and drive tube - but still the clutch just spins away without spining the drive tube. Anybody else know what it can be?

You mean the clutch housing spins, but not the spin basket.
Pull the pump and motor and turn the coupler on the tranny clockwise. If it is very hard to turn the spin basket, you have dragging brake shoes. If so, go to my article "replacing brake shoes" page four of the general talk section. Post results. Also, you might have something caught in the tub, or a busted lint filter under the spin basket, or a busted plastic brake release paw.

I have the same problem. Just replace same parts on my KitchenAid KAWE577BWH0 as advice by a tech in my area and still the same issue. Once it gets to the spin cycle it just make a noice 'hums'.

Thank you for your reply.

I believe it is likely the brake shoe problem. Although the basket drive I bought has new brake shoes on it - not sure why it would have a problem. Anyway it is hard to turn - the original basket drive I replaced was hard to turn also. I completely took the the washer apart including the tub - turned it on - and still no spin to the spin tube. So, shouldn't be a stuck lint filter or anything else stuck in the tub.

Would it be advisable to grind down these new brake shoes or is there something else that needs to be done? Perhaps the spring is too large? It is the spring that came with it. It is yellow. It also came with a smaller spring that is suppose to be used with compact ones.

Okay, I took the basket drive back out and observed the rollers. They look new, but they should since the part is new (I'm a genius:) ). Went ahead and put oil on the rollers and put the part back in. Seemed to be able to turn a little more freely, though I think not as well as it should. I'm not sure how freely it is suppose to turn. It definitly has some resistance to it... Anyway, I put the trany and motor back on and tried it out. Now it spins. It seems a littel noisy however. Seems like the brake is still draging. Not sure my next step. Perhaps grind the shoes a little?

If the washer is in a damp location, that might explain things. You could have a pitted brake housing. Yes, I would grind down the shoes 1/4 off and put them back on. Try not to suck in the asbestos dust while grinding. Post results.

Uh, you should look at the brake shoe rollers for excessive wear. Any wear you see by pushing the roller up and down is a problem, causes dragging.

Okay, I got the thing all back together and it spins really well. It is a bit noisy as perhaps the break shoes are dragging a bit and another secondary noise which sounds a bit like a rattling noise. Perhaps it may be the motor stuggling to spin the tube with the brake shoes dragging? Whatever the cause, at least it now spins and I can get a couple of loads done before my wife goes crazy :)

The ran into another problem in that when it spins, it's a bit off balance and I can't figure out what is wrong. It's not too bad on slow spin, but on full spin the think bangs out of control. I checked this out while I had the cabinet off and everything in the suspention seemed fine. Got my level out and checks out okay. Is there something else I should check?

Thanks for all your help!

Make sure all the suspension springs are in place. Look under the tub at the skate board. Look for misalighnment on both sides.

The had already checked the springs and alignment of the skate plate. All the springs were in place and the skate plate looked aligned properly. Only thing else I can think of is that perhaps one or more of the springs no longer gives the proper tension. When looking at the machine from the front, the basket noticeably tilts to the right a little.

On top of the skate board there are three brown plastic shims, one of them may have broken.
