My top load unit is 16 years old (but still in great shape). Recently stopped working in regular speed normal and permanent press mode (will fill, but nothing else... not even drain at the end). Timer still moves however. In gentle mode (slow speed) it will fill & aggitate, then do nothing when supposed to be in the rinse cycle, then finally spin & drain. I'm thinking bad timer, but I opened and inspected and saw nothing abnormal (not sure how to test). Could this be the motor? Would it still drain and spin in gentle mode if the motor is no longer working on regular speed? Thanks in advance for the help.

It could be a bad winding in the motor, but it's more likely to be a bad timer. The timer contacts fail more frequently than the motor windings. To test the timer, you need a fairly good understanding of the schematic diagram, as well as understanding how to interpret the timer chart. More often, you can look into the timer and see burnt contacts.

Thanks. Would I be able to test the bad motor windings with a simple voltage meter (checking for current flow)... or would this still show a current even if the regular speed portion is no longer working? Any other switches that would cause this I could check, or does it operating in some cycles indicate they are all working properly? Just trying to eliminate any other possibilities before I have them ship me a timer. Thanks again!
