My dryer will not start AND stay on. I push the switch and it runs for a second and then turns off as soon as I release the button - I thought it was the switch and replaced it - not the switch! If I hold the button it continues to run - any ideas?

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL GEW9878PW1 29" Electric Dryer | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is the tech sheet
http://www.servicematters.com/docs/wiring/Tech%20Sheet%20-%208533775.pdf

You will notice that the Push To Start switch is wired in parallel with the Motor Relay so the motor relay contacts are not closing for some reason.

I believe the heater and motor relays are the same, so I would swap them.
If it nor runs you know that the relay is bad.

If this makes no difference then it is probably the control board.
