Noticed my freezer was thawing out a couple weeks ago so I messed with the t-stat and cleaned the condenser coils and it seemed to be working fine, but now again freezer is completely warm feeling and everything has thawed in it. fridge was at 35 degrees and is now up to 40. I'm thinking it may be the defrost thermostat but don't want to start throwing parts at a 13 yr old fridge. I do not notice any frost build up in the freezer but notice that the fridge seems to get really cold just before the freezer thaws out. Any help would be great.

Sounds like it is an intermittent problem so could be a pain to find.

To eliminate a defrost problem just remove the evaporator coil cover.
If the coils are not heavily iced/frosted over then you do not have a defrost problem. At least as far as defrosting goes.

Check to see if the compressor is running, you should be able to hear it and feel it vibrating. If it is running you may be low on freon though this is usually not an intermittent problem.

If it is not running, rotate the temperature dial.
If it fires up then odds are the thermostat is the culprit.

If this does nothing try rotating the defrost timer cam.
There is usually a hole in the cover to let you do this without having to take the cover off.
If it fires up the timer probably needs replacing re: it is sticking in defrost

Be gentle when doing both the above as often just a bump will get the part's contacts to close and you want to find out which one is the probable cause.

Below are a couple sites that may help you troubleshoot this.

thanks. The Evaporator coils seem fine and no water drips when it thaws out so pretty sure that's not it. it does turn on as soon as I turn the thermostat up so I'm guessing that is it then.
