I have an Amana (Maytag) refridgerator (fridge on top, freezer on bottom, if that makes a difference), every maybe 1-2 minutes it makes this winnie noise for about 12 seconds and stops again. Fridge is cold, freezer is cold, so everything seems to be working fine.
It sounds like maybe a solenoid that is trying to energize but not working.
Initial thought was maybe the ice maker solenoid valve but the sound is not coming from there (and the ice maker is working fine). As best as I can tell it is coming from an electrical connection right next to the big black round thing with all the copper pipes (assuming that would be the condensor - pardon my lack of knowledge here).
How do I fix this please.

More often than not a whining noise, or what sounds like a dying bird, is usually associated with a bad evaporator fan motor, located in the freezer. But you say its located near the compressor, the black soccer ball size motor. there is a fan back there as well, but these dont usually scream like the freezer fan does. Next time you h ear this noise, open up your freezer door, and see if the noise gets considerably louder. If it does, your evap fan motor is the problem. Well, it seems I spoke too soon.
Everything in the freezer is melting, so much for keeping cold!
As far as the fan, it was running continously before when the winning would start and stop, So I don't think its the fan.
Now the fan has stopped.
Checked the parts section following my original post and found out what I think is causig the problem is the Compressor relay/capacitor.
Could this just be a bad relay and hopefully not the compressor?

By the way, I did open the freezer door during a winning sessions and the noise level did not increase.

since you are not cold as you first thought, and that noise is repeating every couple of minutes eminating directly from the compressor, it is most likely that start relay /overload kit. before you purchase, do a quick check. unplug the fridge first, and before you do anything else, make sure you unplug fridge, after you unplug the fridge, gently and evenly pull that start relay off the compressor posts, depending on model, the overload may or may not stay on. give the relay a shake, does it sound like sand in a cup? If so, you likely have a bad start relay / overload kit. If not, you might still have a bad starter, but you may also have a bad compressor.

Pulled the replay off, no sand noise.
One funny note, as I was pulling it off it made a small click sound (the fridge was unpluged) so maybe the replay was stuck?
Unfortunately after I put everything back and connected the power, it started doing the same exact thing as before.
Now the parts section has relay/capacitor unit or just a capacitor unit. I can't imagine the capacitor is bad so I might as well by the relay unit.
Agree?

I too hear noise from the appliance. Fridge is fine but freezer is problem. Had a repair guy out 10 days ago who told me that he didn't see anything wrong and that I should try to get used to the intermittent noise. I found frost on the door rails. Cleaned it out and lowered temp in freezer. Found ice of bottom of freezer and now freezer is frozen closed. Had the board replaced 6 months ago to the tune of $350. The appliance is 12 yrs old. Not sure what to do. Hate to buy a new fridge but also don't want to throw good money after bad. Please advise.
