In my original thread, we came to the conclusion that the problem was my motor coupling.

It was indeed broken when inspected, but I suspect that the real problem is what broke it.

Once it gets up to speed in the spin cycle it sounds like there is someone hitting the wash tub with a sledge hammer. I don't really know how else to explain it, lol.

I would try to make another video, but I just put the new motor coupling in it and I don't want to break it.

Any idea what could be the problem?

Well, after poking around at some diagrams last night, I have come up with a theory.

Is it possible that the "smashing" sound is occurring when the washer is trying to shift during the spin cycle?

It only does it when it gets up to about 3/4 of the usual spin speed.

Possibly the shift actuator in the transmission has gone sour?

I'm all about tearing down the tranny to replace individual parts if I can, rather that spend $150 on the whole tranny.

I'll probably start the tear down tonight after work.

Any thought on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

Shift actuator?

I really can't afford a new washer right now, lol.

Yup, it gets almost up to full speed in the spin cycle and then is sounds like there's a gnome in there, hitting the tub with a sledge hammer,

It sounds like there is noise coming from the agitator itself.
Try running it in spin with the agitator removed to
see if anything changes. If not it might help to remove
the cabinet then run it through spin to try and get a
better fix on where the noise is actually comming from.
You will have to bypass the lid switch by running a jumper
wire between the two outside wires on the lid switch
plug. Dont run anything to the center terminal (thats ground).
Just renember to keep your hands, kids and pets away
from the spinning tub or other moving parts when doing this.

You might have missing teeth in the tranny nylon gear. Pull the pump and motor and turn the coupler clockwise to turn the basket. If you feel a rough spot, it's probably the gear. Usually these break due to jamming brake shoes or something sticking in the tub like a bad plastic filter. Post results.

I have run it with no agitator, and get the same noise.

I'll try turning manually tomorrow, and I'll get the results up.
