My 3 yr old GE Profile side by side has started to fluxuate temperatures. It is set at -1 and 37 and is now at 8 and 44. For the last couple of weeks it has been going from -6 and 35 to 8 and 44 on a daily basis creating a mess in the freezer. I finally just turned off the ice maker. Just before the problem I move it to clean and leveled it because it was leaning back for the last couple years (with no problems). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My first reaction to your statement: Just before the problem I move it to clean and leveled it ---Often when I hear this, coupled with your temp fluctuations, leads me to believe your condenser fan motor has stopped running, causing your compressor to run hotter than normal, and when it gets too hot, the compressor, not the fridge, shuts off. IM guessing that you notice things are nice and cold first thing in the morning, and after lunch or dinner its warmer. You will need to replace this condenser fan motor, if its not running, and if the fridge is running, the CFM should be also.

Thank you for looking at my post. The temp fluxuations are actually pretty random. This morning it was back down to -3 & 37 and this afternoon went down to -5 and 37 with the family at home all day. Is there a way to check the CFM? Is it possible it is the motherboard giving bad signals?

those temperatures arent random, those are pretty consistent, especially with people home and likely using it somewhat. In addition, with those consistent temps i doubt you have a problem with that fan, but you can check that fan by feeling along the front toe plate for any warm or cool air flow, it will be very gentle, but you should feel a difference from one side to the other.

is your food in fact warmer, such as milk doesnt always seem cold or bread and ice cream in freezer is sometimes soft? or is it strictly the readings from the controls you are seeing? Do you see these warmer temps at certain times of the day? Do these fluctuations happen every day? Do you have young kids who might be less than careful about closing doors? Do you have too much food, or a drawer that you have trouble sliding all the way in, preventing a door from closing properly on its own? you might notice a door is easier to open at times than others. is there any pattern that you can think of to those fluctuations? I just re read your original post, and you said you disconnected the ice maker, and leveled it after it was leaning back. If anything, you want your fridge leaning more towards the back then even directly upright, it helps with door closure, and proper drainage of water. Also, I dont know if you had a noise correlating with cooling problems, but if water intended for icemaker instead went down inside back wall, it can obstruct the freezer fan.

this is why its hard to diagnose off site, several small symptoms can lead to a proper diagnosis.

Hi- Adam's wife here.

I think the prob started before he leveled the fridge. I think it started after we came home one day to find the freezer door had been left open (an inch or so) all day. Now the ice melts and we have icicles inside. He recently flipped the switch to turn off the ice maker so we don't have the ice melting in there and re-freezing. We have not cleaned out the freezer- icicles still there. Could have ice blocking something? the milk side seems fine, it is the ice cream that is having the trouble. It is starting to melt and re-freezing. I don't think the door has been left open since this one time.

Also I think we have always had trouble with the ice dispenser. We press for ice and hear the motor churning and churning.... one ice cube drops, more churning and churning. Then we give up and reach inside and grap ice out of the box. He leveled it hoping this would help the ice work it's way out.

thanks for your help, hopefully we can get this straightened out.

Was thanked: 2 time(s) in 2 post(s)
Remove the freezer back panel and check the frost pattern, then post results.
If ok, you may have a motherboard problem. Remove the cover to it in the back of the refrigerator, remove the board and check for bad solder joints in back of the power relay, just might be your problem.
