I just noticed that on our Amana side by side that it is getting real hot on the strip between the doors. The fridge side is working ok but the freezer side isn't as cold as it should be. Any ideas?

I could be wrong here, but I think Amana runs the high side refrigerant line through that area to prevent condensation build-up.
If that is the case, then most likely you need to do a GOOD cleaning of your condenser that is located on the bottom of the unit. Also check in the back of the unit to make sure the fan motor located near the compressor is operating properly.

gearhead the condenser was definately dirty and needed to be cleaned. I also notice that the fan down there is hard to turn and never comes on, am I right in assuming that it should be changed too?

Fan needs to be replaced.
Hopefully the compressor is not damaged from the excessive heat.
