Thanks again for your help-I will go back out and look-I'm sorry to be so dumb but I don't understand what you mean by contactor outside the unit- the big wire contactor (for compressor and fan, etc.) has a yellow wire on one side of contactor and blue wire on the other side-

I went under house and checked wires to Air Handler Board-looks like W2 is connected to Zone Control-they have put a jumper wire to W1 and W3 so 1,2 and 3 are all wired together- at the heat elements there is a white wire to the side of each contactor and a white wire connected to a metal round disc (limit witch ?) that is connected to other side of contactor transformer- THANKS

My thermostat is four-wire without aux and emer. settings but I did have the correct changeover thermostats when the system was installed. The Trane "specialists" came out, changed the thermostats (2) and never came back. I also have zone damper control unit (2 zones, I think). They apparently wired the system to have the heat elements on all the time with heat.
My question is how can I use heat pump heat only except for very cold days and nights. What wires and where should I change. THANKS!

Disconnected W-1, W-2, and W-3 which were wired together- replaced W-1 (black, from Heat Pump) and W-2 (from Zone control or tstat) separately. Cut on Heat at indoor tstat. Lower contactor not engaged but upper contactor is engaged. Does this mean an outdoor thermostat from the Heat Pump is controlling the upper contactor-temp outside is 38?

no all this means is that they brought the heat on all at once sounds like you have an advaacced system di you have model numbers off indoor 'outdoor units and the model and make of the zone control system dont want to lead you into messing somthing up here

I did buy a 2 stage heat pump thermostat and my question is how to hook it up- the instructions say to match colors- my colors in old thermostat are R,W,G,Y.

There should be instruction -come with ALL new thermostat with varieous configuration. One of the configuation should say; Heatpump with two stage heating. there should be intruction on where to hook up your aux. device.(any color wire is ok, as long as it is hook up per diagram. follow the diagram)

I will see if I can look up yor particular thermostat.
