I have power to the display, works fine, blower works, starts o.k., only thing I do not have have is heat. I'm getting a sparking sound occasionally with a burnt smell from fan. I am thinking the magnetron is bad. Does this sound correct ? Have not did any voltage checks, was told the magnetron was on warranty by GE because of the age of the microwave. Weighing the cost of service call & labor vs. cost of magnetron kit.

Trial and error replacement of parts can be very expensive; especially for microwave ovens, that can cost less than the sum of the replacement costs of their components. If you have a good meter, and are willing to carefully follow our step by step instructions (Safety is of utmost importance), we can guide you through the proper diagnosis and repair of your appliance.

Out of town until 16 Mar, wife has contacted a repairman, GE is sending me the Magnetron on warranty.
Yes, have a DVM, and I know it would not be hard, done similar repairs, but I'm out of the picture unless the repair fails.
Really appreciate the reply. Will post again if more problems come up.
Thanks again

Just happened to me..wife has complained for weeks of burning odor in the kitchen, then the MW when TU. It turned out to be one of the 3 door interlock switches. Switch contacts were marginally making connections, switch overheated, melting plastic encapsulation, allowing one the internal contacts move beyond the point where the contact actuator could close it.

Disassembled the switch and used a relay contact file (USAF, 1959) to clean the contact point surfaces and then reassembled using epoxy to hold the one contract back in the correct position.
