I have just finished replacing the tub seal and hub bearing on our 10 year old washer. (Water was dripping from the seal under the center of the outer tub) The assembly went well and took a couple of hours. When we started it up, the leak was gone!! However, during the spin cycle the machine makes a grinding noise that is really annoying. The pump is working, the inner tub seems to stop fine after the cycle but I am concerned that the leak has affected other parts. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

It makes noise when the inner basket comes up to speed.

Remove the main drive belt that runs to the transmission pulley.
Then set the timer to the final spin cycle and then start the washer.
Is the noise still present? (Leave the pump belt on the washer.)
Check the drive belt while to have it off for excess wear or damage.

Did you replace the upper bearing, just under the tub? The slow leak caused by the bad tub seal causes the bearing to rust (I've done this several times). The bad news is that it has to come all the way apart again to fix this. In addition to what you did before, the tub has to come out and the bearing assembly replaced.

I replaced the tub seal and the outer hub bearing. I just returned from one of our local appliance parts stores to get the bearing that fits just above the pulley. The service tech told me pretty much the same thing you have said. The most likely cause of the noise is the bearing located right above the brake. He gave me the bearing and the special wrench to remove the brake. Well, I have been whacking on it for 20 minutes and it won't move. (yes, I did take the retaining bracket off). He told me the thread is reversed so I need to turn it clockwise. So, are you telling me that I have to remove the tub before it will come loose? (he showed me a cutaway view of the brake and where the bearing is located)
