My washer thumps at the end of a spin cycle. Or when it is spinning and you lift the lid. What can this be?

Probably the brakes. Look at the Sticky on direct drive brake issues by Richappy at the top of the page and check it out.

I noticed that the tub does not stop quickly, but rolls to a stop while and thumps at the same time. I think the tub is comming up and thumps when it goes around and comes down. Any more info you can give me. I read the note on brake replacement. Do you think that is what it is.

Thank you Ron

That is probably it, but on the way in you can check your suspension springs and parts and see if there is any problem in that area. You might want to change out the springs as you do this, since they are not expensive and problems are not necessarily visible.

Do I need to replace the whole Basket drive and brake assembly? Can you tell me how to do that?

The Sticky I mentioned earlier and this service manual

https://secured.whirlpoo...2007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

will take you through the process. You should know that the brake diagnosis is not necessarily correct, several items can be causing this so that is why I suggested you take it apart and inspect the springs and support and pad (the manual will cover this). Dive into the brakes only as a last resort.

It also bangs when it starts up. Into a different cycle. Like there is play, it catches and bang. Its in and going again. Can you tell me the price of the spanner wrench and part #. I also noticed the spin tub will turn clockwise by hand. Will go counter clockwise part way then stop. That play I think is the bang in start up. Do you what this might be?
Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it.

Ron

Here is the spanner

Part number: AP4503397
Part number: AP4503397

Still sounds like brakes but you are just going to have to dive in there.

;) I found the problem.
The Drive Block was spinning on the Basket drive shaft. It was going over the tabs on the shaft. I don't know if the spanner nut was not tightened properly or if it came loose. It was tight when I took it off.

Thanks for all your help. Hopefully this helps someone else.

Ron:)
