I have an Amana SxS about 8 years old and the freezer seems to have gone out (fridge side *seems* to be doing ok). All lights are on, and removing the back panels reveals that the fan is running and moving air and there is no frost so no freeze over problem. About every five minutes I can hear something kick on and start running (compressor?) but then it shuts off after about 15 seconds. From looking through the threads on this forum it looks like maybe a compressor problem? How do I know what part to replace? thanks!

Well, I was wrong: the fridge side went down too. I can hear a click, then what I think is the compressor trying to run for about 15 seconds, then another click and it shuts off. this occurs about every five minutes.
Thanks!

you could try replacing the start relay and overload (will be attached to the compressor) and that will sometimes fix the problem but if it doesnt then most likely a bad compressor.

So I replaced the overload/relay assembly (which ended up being a lot easier that I thought) and the problem persisted. Argh! Threw in the towel and called an appliance repair service I'd used before and told them I had a failed compressor. Their tech came out and said, "yep, that's a failed compressor, but we don't replace those". So basically they came out and confirmed what I already knew. The good news is they didn't charge me a dime.
Any thoughts on how much I can expect this repair to cost me so I know if someone's trying to roll me?
Thanks for the help!

honestly your best bet would be to replace the refrigerator with a new one. replacing the compressor is usually $500 or more
