Can you hear the unit running, or is it shut down?

From your description one of the things that comes to mind is that the unit shut off and went into its defrost cycle but never came back on. The questions I need to ask is do you have any experience doing electrical troubleshooting or testing? Do you know how to use a volt/ohm meter?
