I have a Maytag Skybox refrigerator, model # 1976AAB. It recently stopped cooling and I need to change the capacitor and/or start components. Before changing the components, I will need to discharge the capacitor so I do not receive an electric shock. I have located the white, cylindrical capacitor at the back of the skybox behind a panel, however, I cannot locate the terminals on the capacitor to discharge it. Coming out of one end of the capacitor is a single, thick (1/4 inch thickness) black wire running through it and on the other end is what looks like the tip of a threaded screw. I cannot find the terminals to discharge it. I am not sure if the terminals are inside the capacitor and hidden by a capacitor cover or what. Can someone please help? I am fearful of taking it apart to search for the terminals without discharging it first. Thank you so much! Any help would be appreciated.

I looked around and it looks like your model is an MBV1976AAB.
I cannot find any info on the compressor on this system. Also I must tell you I have never even seen one of these, so hopefully someone who has some experience with them can help.
If your capacitor has the bolt on one end and only one wire on the other then the bolt is the negative terminal.
Also if you have the wiring diagram and this capacitor is wired across AC volts it does not need to be discharged as it is used for phase shifting and not for storing voltage. |

Thank you Denman. I really appreciate your help. There is no info. on the compressor because they don't make the compressor anymore. So either it's a problem with one of the starting components (which I can fix) OR it's a problem with the compressor (then I'm out of luck). Before I attempt to disassemble and reassemble one of the starting components, I thought it would be a good idea to discharge the capacitor. I am glad to learn that the bolt is the negative terminal. However, where would the positive terminal be? The other end of the capacitor has a black wire coming out of it which attaches to the starting component which then attaches to the compressor. I guess I will need to know where that lucky positive terminal is located for discharge. Could I just place one lead from the resistor on the bolt (negative terminal) and the other lead on the black wire coming out of the capacitor for discharge? This is so frustrating. There must be a way to discharge the capacitor? Also, I wouldnt' know if the capacitor is attached to AC volts. :(
