Replacing heating element in Kenmore stacked dryer

I have a Kenmore stacked washer/dryer and my dryer heating element failed (visual inspection showed coil broken). I ordered a new heater assembly and now that it's here I can't figure out how to remove the drum hub. The hub must be removed as the heater element can't fit over it. I've tried everything but I can't get a tool (wrench or socket) on the two tiny bolts holding the retainer that keeps the ball on the end of the hub in the plastic bearing. HELP! How do I remove the hub so I can get my new heating element in place? And while I'm at it, why did they ever design this thing so that you have to take it completely apart to change a simple item like the heater? Wouldn't it have made more sense to give the heating element a center hole large enough to just fit over the hub? This is driving me nuts! Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
