My bake element burned through so I replaced it today. When I turned the circuit breaker back on, I noticed that the new element heated up (not red hot) before I even set the oven controls. So, I tried to set it to bake to see if I could then shut it off. The circuit breaker flipped off. What do you think it is? Thank you.

790 is a Frigidaire

I could not cross match it so the following manual is a shot in the dark.

Sounds like one side of the element is grounded.
Normally an element is wired so that one side goes to one side of the 240 volts, through the element, then through it's control relay on the board to the other side of the 240 volts.

It is possible that one side of the element is grounded (touching the frame)? Depending on which side, this supplies 120 volts (half the 240) to the element all the time so it heats but never to full temperature.
Then when you turned the oven on the grounded side was a direct short to ground for that side of the 240 so it blew the breaker.

That worked. The right wire was broken in two pieces (maybe it had connected with the side when I tucked it into the back of the unit). I replaced the connection with a new one, and it works so far. Thanks so much. I'm an English teacher, so this was new for me (and saved me a small fortune from what I just found out from Sears in their email). Thanks again! Marty:)
