My 5-6 year old top load direct drive washer just started making a squealing/chirping noise when in the spin cycle. Where should I look for problems? Bearings?

Look at the Sticky by Richappy at the top of this page on direct drive washer brakes.

It is likely the clutch or the brakes, and Sticky will show you how to get into to take a look see.
