I am having problems with a Whirlpool dishwasher, it starts all by itself when I close the door. Another problem is it works intermittently when selecting a cycle, sometimes China cycle or Normal. Any help very much appreciated. Thank you.

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL GU940SCGB3 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is the tech sheet
http://www.servicematters.com/docs/wiring/Tech%20Sheet%20-%208051291.pdf

This is going to be a crap shoot.
It is probably either the keyboard or the control board.
Unfortunately I cannot find a keypad switch diagram which would have let you check it with a meter.
Since the unit has a stuck key error (light flashes), see the tech sheet, my guess would be that the control board is the problem.

Denman,

Thank you for the quick reply. Would the control also cause the dishwasher to start when the door is closed without pressing any buttons on the panel?

Yes it could. I would check it visually though I doubt you will find anything.

As I said if the start button was shorted (always closed) it should give an error as per the data sheet.

You could try the following but it is a long shot as the cleaning can fix an open connection and I doubt that is your problem.

Connector Cleaning / Checking
Unplug the unit
Open it up
Remove the ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board at the control board.
Clean the edge connector.
If it is the type where there is not a connector just the insulation is removed, it can be cleaned with a pencil eraser. Do not use an ink eraser as it is too abrasive.
Check the tracks in the ribbon cable for hairline cracks. A magnifying glass helps here.
Would not hurt to clean the connector on the board. Use electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. Be gentle and do not reconnect till all the solvent evaporates.
Reconnect everything and give it a try.

Thank you Denman, I will check it out and give it a try. If that does not work I will order a new control.

I'm experiencing the same troubles, was replacing the control board the trick? The machine runs on it's own, certain buttons are starting to not work, the machine stops mid cycle and needs to be restarted. All sorts of weird happenings.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Same machine and model: gu940scgb3
