Symptoms are a knocking noise during the spin cycle.

The machine seems to fill, agitate, and pump properly. This weekend I removed the agitator and basket and put it back together. When the basket was out I noticed marks on the bottom of the tub where it appears the bottom of the basket is rubbing the tub. The marks seemed to be isolated toward the front protion of the tub bottom. Upon putting the basket back into the maching and adjusting the "tightness" of the spanner nut I was able to eliminate the knocking by loosely replacing the spanner nut, at that time the basket would spin (without clothes in the basket).

However when I ran a load of laundry, the basket did not spin during the spin cycle with wet clothes in the basket (had to wring out laundry by hand before putting in the dryer).

Prior to the current problem (Not sure if this is related to the current problem or not) The spin cycle was run two consecutive times for one load of clothes (manually by resetting the selector knob). At the end of the second spin cycle I smelled a faint burning rubber smell (similar to belt on vaccum). With the next load of clothes I noticed the knocking noise and attempted to redistribute the load of laundry, however, the machine continued to knock wven without any clothes in the basket.

Try replacing the Drive Block, and be sure you have the special spanner wrench by tighting the nut.

sid:

I have removed the drive block, but cant understand how the solid metal drive block could "malfunction" or break-down. I will try replacing this, but is there anything else that can cause the washer not to spin? If the washer didn't agitate or spin I would check the motor coupler, however, since it does agitate but does not spin I am lost on what to check. What about the clutch?

Thanks,

Yes, two other things. First of all did you tighten the spanner nut with the special wrench? While you can get it off with a pipe wrench, it usually takes the special spanner wrench to tighten it enough to get the washer to spin.

Second, if the drive block and spanner nut are ok, the clutch failure will cause it not to spin.

Based on your symptoms it seemed the drive block was a more likely candidate, but if that is not the problem the clutch is the next likely suspect.

I have attached three pictures. Picture IMG_0047 shows the transmission shaft, spin tube, spanner nut and basket prior to removing spanner nut and basket last week. What are the tabs on the spin tube immedietly above the spanner nut called/what is the purpose? Do they interact with the agitator assembly? It appears there are "metal shavings" here, or is this just the grease used?

Picture IMG_0075 shows the transmission shaft, spin tube and "lower cylinder" after removal of spanner nut, basket, and drive block. What is the lower cylinder toward the bottom of the picture? There appears to be a rubber o-ring/gasket/seal around the insite of this outer cylinder and the spin tube?. I have found pieces of what look like a black rubber seal/o-ring that appear to have been cut/worn. One was found last week around the top of the spanner nut and another was found tonight after i removed the transmission and partially pulled out the basket drive and brake assembly.

Picture IMG_0073 shows the transmission shaft and spin tube focused on the tabs on top of the spin tube, again what are these tabs?

I am going to buy a new basket drive block tomorrow morning. I have a video showing the transmission shaft spinning with the basket remaining still. When the basket is turned by hand it spins but makes a knocking noise and appears off balance. Can this all be attributed to the drive block? Is it probable that the spin tube is worn? Since i cannot post the video here, do you have an email address i can send to?

Thank you for all your help so far...

Yes, it looks like from your pictures that your spin tube shaft is damaged which is causing your problem. If you replace it, the drive block, (and the clutch, might was well do everything) and the spanner nut you should be all set, but you may not want to spend that much on parts. For a little more money you can get a new, no frills top loader which will do a great job for you.

That's the way I would go.
