My whirlpool dishwasher has water sitting in the bottom. It started about 6 weeks ago. After the wash and dry cycle, it is empty. As the day goes on, running water in the sink, using the disposal, it gathers water and "stench". I cleaned the rubber part of the check valve with no results. It stinks!

Is the drain hose looped higher than the input to the disposal?
Either to an air gap or attached to the bottom of the cabinet top.
This should prevent back flow/siphoning.
See this install sheet, not for a Whirlpool but has the best info I could find.

Sounds like the back flow flapper valve is leaking some but the above should eliminate the problem.
Also sounds like you may have a partial plug in the disposal or drain as it used to be OK and now is not draining fast enough.

Several years ago, I visited some relatives for the holidays. They complained about the new dishwasher the husband had just installed. He connected it to disposal and they ran it regularly, but after a short period of time it would not clear the dirty water after each cycle and the stench got worse and worse. I am a novice myself, but I was bored.

The husband (I assume in his hurry to install the unit) DID NOT remove the plug that was in place in the disposaly when he hooked up the dishwasher. The plug was flush with the opening and I guess he either forgot to remove it or did not know to remove it.

Anyway, with the first few uses, the pressure from the discharge partially dislodged the plug, pushing it in and providing a very small opening. In fact, it would discharge but only through a small opening. What seemed to be a working dishwasher, turned out to slowly clog up and stink from the back wash that never quite cleared out of the machine.

Was he read faced when I took some needle nosed pliers and pulled the plug out. At this point, it had been pushed in to the disposal enough that he did not even see it when it was trying to self diagnose the problem.

Just a thought. I am no expert. In case this is the solution, will you let us know? Sorry for the typos. But I cannot figure out how to correct them without going back and erasing what I have already typed.

knarfoh's post reminded me that I should not forget the basics.

I interpreted "It stinks" as referring to the water but perhaps you are just commenting on the situation.

There is a possibility that the water inlet valve is not sealing correctly.
This would be clean water in the unit.
