My Maytag washer, purchased in 1990 and model # A8340, stopped working, apparently mid-cycle. I went to check on the load and it had just stopped, full of water. I removed the wet laundry, and it started to refill due to drop in the water level. When I rotate the dial, however, it does absolutely nothing - no sound, no hum, nothing. There are no strange smells like anything has "burned out". I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, tripping the breaker, etc. The outlet works fine, as I've tested electric tools on it. Any suggestions on what the problem may be? I'd like to try to repair the washer myself and order the parts on-line.

I have not worked on this model in a long time, so I do not know if the lid switch will cause your problem, but it is a good place to start. For $12 plus shipping you can replace it and see if that will fix it.

Part number: AP3094142
Part number: AP3094142

The other likely problem is a failure of the timer, but in that case I think replacement is a better option because it is expensive and you cannot be certain that will fix things.

Before you do anything, check all of the wiring into the timer and from the timer to the components.
