Hello! What a great forum. I hope you guys (and gals) could help me out.
Earlier this year I my fridge stopped working, I did some research and found that a recall had been issued. I Went and got the kit from the local Maytag dealer (relay and overload) and followed the directions included and replaced the parts. Everything was fine until now. Same thing happens again the fridge is warming up, so I went and got another kit, but that didn't work this time.
I've checked the compressor windings and I think there OK I got 3.5, 4.2, and 7.1 ohms. When I plug it in the condenser cooling fan turns on the the compressor hums quietly. Cold air come to the freezer, but the fan is not blowing. I just plugged the unit on 5 minutes ago and the compressor is getting warm and the freezer is getting cold. It seems that after a while It can't maintain temperature. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Here are your parts, has a wiring diagram Replacement parts for MAYTAG PTB1953GEW Ref - Top Mount | AppliancePartsPros.comCold air come to the freezer, but the fan is not blowing. I am assuming that it is the evaporator fan which is not running. Could be that that is all that is wrong with the unit. It will not cool properly unless the fan is pulling air over the evaporator coils. Remove the coil cover and check if the fan is getting power, should be 120 volts. If it is getting power but not rotating then replace the fan. Another way to check the fan is remove it, hook it up to a line cord and try it. Also check that the coils are not heavily iced/frosted over which would be a defrost problem. From your description I doubt this is the problem. In and case unless ice has jammed the fan it should run. |

Thank You. I checked power to the evaporator fan, I measured 119V. I'm going to make a test cord and check the fan motor just to be sure. 75 bucks for this fan motor seems a bit steep. Would I be able to use a different electric motor? Something cheap.

Don't go cheap on refrigerator electrical parts, unless you think you'll enjoy staying in the refrigerator repair business. These appliances are designed to work with the maximum efficiency, using the appropriate replacement parts.

OK Point taken.
Does all the refrigeration happen in the freezer, and the freezer cools the fridge? I know the two can be adjusted independently.
The original problem with the unit was the fridge and freezer were not cold. So I unplugged the fridge and when I plugged it back in hours later I'm pretty sure the evaporator fan would blow cold air in the freezer for a while. Then after messing around with it some more, plugging it back in the fan would not run, and it doesn't now.
The compressor runs and I can feel cold air being generated in the freezer, but I don't feel anything cold in the fridge.
I just hope the evaporator fan is all that is wrong. Could that be true based on the description?

Yes.
In any case if the fan is getting 119 volts and not running as you stated earlier, it is shot and needs replacing. |
