I hope someone out there can help me. Neither the bake nor broil functions of this gas range work, but the surface burners operate. The control panel does not display any error codes, and indicates that it is preheating when bake is selected. I have read many posts on this type of problem, but I am looking for some specific diagnostic guidance for this model that I have never seen addresed. When selecting bake and pressing the start, I hear one faint click from a relay on a control board followed by TWO loud clicks that are clearly from the solenoid in the gas regulator. No gas flows, and there is no visible spark at the ignitor. When selecting broil, I do not hear the two loud clicks from the regulator solenoid, and there is similarly no gas or spark at the broiler.

I understand I can check the resistance of the bake and broil solenoids per instructions from Gene to another poster, but the unit is in a rental house that I cannot get back to right away, so I am hoping to get some diagnostic guidance to take my best shot at ordering the correct part based on the behavior (not the best approach, I know...).

Here are my specific questions:
1. If one of the solenoids (i.e. either the bake or broil) is bad in the gas regulator, I understand that this will not allow gas to flow in either mode, but will this affect the generation of the SPARK at the bake/broil tubes? In other words, is this consistent with my observation that there is no spark at either of the ignitors? Or would you expect to get a spark, just no gas flow in the case of a bad regulator/solenoid?

2. The other possibility is the Direct Spark Ignition board (DSI) may be bad. This board appears to provide the voltages to activate the bake/broil solenoids too. Is the fact that there is a spark generated on the surface burners, but none in the bake/broil mode a clue here?

3. Is the fact that I hear two loud clicks coming from the solenoid when turning on bake (but no gas/spark) but do NOT hear any solenoid activity when turning on the broil mode offer a clue? Does this point towards a bad broil solenoid? If so, is this consistent with no spark as well, or can that only be explained by a bad DSI board?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

:( Can anyone out there please offer an opinion on this? My main question is: If the gas regulator (i.e. with the bake/broil solenoid) is bad, but the electric ignition control board (DSI board) is OK, would there still be sparks generated at the bake/broil ignitors when bake or broil is turned on? Please help if you have any ideas.

Thanks.

Rick,

Most likely the problem is a bad gas valve/regulator. There is something else can be bad as well, but it has to be diagnosed. You can buy and take with you all parts but anyway you have to run the troubleshooting first. You also can learn how the DSI system works from the Manual.

Thanks for your input Gene, and especially for the technical description of the DSI board that you linked to. From reading this, it sounds like the microprocessor on the DSI board performs a continuity check on the regulator solenoids before generating the spark, so your speculation that the regulator is bad is consistent. I will try replacing this first and will update with results.

Did you ever fix this?? I have the same problem but reversed..
When I try to broil it clicks 3 times but no spark and it won't light. When I try to bake, I hear a faint click in the control panel but don't hear it trying to ignite at all.. Neither broil or bake works, but the top 4 burners work fine.
I ordered a replacement DSI and replaced mine with it but that didn't fix it, I Have the same problem still!!!!
Anyone ??

Guessing is very costly way of repair. You have to have a simple multimeter to perform the troubleshooting.

yea, very costly.. I do have a multimeter and did some testing as per this pdf,
http://www.applianceaid.com/DSI_manual.pdf
Unfortunately I must have read something wrong..
On Section 3 of the testing DSI step 3 read correctly, but step 4 my reading didn't seem to read correctly, which said it could be the EOC.
Step 6 failed and it says to then replace the DSI control.
For the broil function step 3, and 4 passed, but step 6 failed, and it then says to replace the DSI control...

Have you reactivated Bake mode while performing the tests? As long as the control does not sense the flame, the previous command should be suspended and that can be why you got such readings.

I would start the troubleshooting from the coils on the gas valve/regulator. The troubleshooting instructions in the manual are confusing sometimes while this is the most common problem (at least in my experience).

I tested the gas valve / regulator and these were the results..
When I tested the broil, it showed around 196 ohms, but when I tested the Bake, it didn't read anything. I am assuming this means that the regulator needs to be replaced? Any help would be great.. Don't want to go purchase another part for no reason.

Sorry for the delay.

The gas valve/regulator is bad. No doubt about it. If you need the correct part number, post the complete model number of the range.
