My washer is making a noise when it is agitating, not a thump or a grind but more like a surge (brief) and the lights in the area are affected. What would cause this? Seems to happen as cycle is advancing. Still works but without interruption but want to find out why and what is needed to fix. Thank you,

The cause of this could be: the timer, the motor or the wiring. Try to pinpoint the noise and post your findings. Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool washer Model LA7800XPW0Gene.

I would pull off your pump and motor and turn the transmission coupler counter clockwise and check for internal transmission problems like jamming at different positions of rotation.

This is a good tip for a direct drive washer.
I believe the washer we are talking about is a belt driven model.
Gene.

Uh, sorry, wrong washer type. It also could be a wire shorting on the control magnet housing, the two solenoid item attached to the tranny.
