I have a Kenmore, made by Whirlpool, in the same age range. I suspect they are constructed very similarily. Mine comes apart with a #2 Philips or square head screwdriver. Three screws to remove the cover, two in front & one one the rear. It's pretty straight forward. Good Luck! Jon B.
